Most wireless streamers we've seen look like a little black box. But DVDO is making the Air WirelessHD solution a standout. The Air WirelessHD keeps the funkiness to its design, without creating a wired mess. It has a wireless transmitter, a wireless receiver and a receiver-mounting clip that attaches to the wall or on top of the TV. Operating at 60GHz, the Air WirelessHD can stream 1080p video and 7.1 surround sound, for both 2D and 3D. It can also transmit HDMI signals, including those from the Consumer Electronics Control…

Remember the old Reese's Peanut Buttercup commercial where the great flavors of chocolate and peanut butter get combined for the first time? Peerless-AV thinks it has stumbled upon the same great combination. Its new PeerAir Wireless Mounting Solutions line of indoor and outdoor wireless mounts can also stream full HD 1080p 60Hz content to flat-panel TVs and projectors up to 131 feet away. The mounts eliminate the time-consuming, sometimes prohibitive, job of running cable and open up screen and projector placement opportunities that previously were not possible. The PeerAir Wireless…

A new organization called WiSA (Wireless Speaker and Audio) hopes to propagate a standard for wireless 7.1 surround sound. It is being driven by HDMI developer Silicon Image along with Summit Wireless, developer of the wireless audio technology on which the WiSA “standard” is based. Wireless “standards” abound for home automation, PC peripherals, video and more … so why not wireless audio? “I think it’s an industry first,” says Jim Venable, senior director of standards for Silicon Image and president of the WiSA Association, in an interview with CE Pro.…

iTunes Needs to Improve Quality of Music Downloads
Robert Archer | 12/09 08:19 AM,
10 Comments
It wasn't that long ago that I had to manage the content stored on my iPod and first-generation iPhone. Until I upgraded the hard drive on my iMac, I remember managing the amount of hard drive space my iTunes content took up by prioritizing the content I wanted to keep in tact through the import methods I used. Now with the introduction of Apple's iCloud and other cloud-based storage services, storage issues will soon be a thing of the past. Music lovers will no longer be limited to the restrictions…

In a strange twist that would be great to include in your next customer newsletter, Hedy Lamarr, the famous Hollywood leading lady from the 1940s, is the co-inventor of spread spectrum, frequency-hopping wireless technology that is the basis for most wireless alarm systems, cordless phones, WiFi, and Bluetooth. The invention was recently revealed as part of an upcoming biography on Lamarr, who starred in such blockbuster movies as "Samson and Delilah" with Victor Mature. The book, "Hedy's Folly" by Richard Rhodes, is already set to be made into a movie…

If you need a quickie on AirPlay, head to the Crutchfield piece, which includes some good screen grabs for reference. Here are a few nuggets: You can only stream from a hand-held device to one AirPlay receiving device at a time. Steven Castle | 12/01 10:09 AM,

Verizon, which in October launched its Home Monitoring and Control service that offers basic home automation and energy management options, is looking to grow its services in 2012. Verizon follows other large service providers ADT, Comcast, Vivint, and Alarm.com into the home control and remote monitoring space, though with a lower $10 monthly fee (after an initial purchase of kits ranging from $70 to $220) and an energy reader that can report on whole-house electricity usage in its Energy Control and Home Monitoring and Control Kits. Look for Verizon to…
